Netflix to Premiere ‘Monsters,’ a Canon Prequel to ‘One Piece,’ this January

Eiichiro Oda, the legendary mangaka, is known for his masterpiece ‘One Piece,’ the best-selling manga ever. However, many don’t know that his first work was the ‘Monsters’ manga, which he started three years before ‘One Piece.’

The one-shot story, a canon and integral part of the One Piece universe, will be adapted into an anime by Netflix. We are happy to share all the details we have gathered about this exciting announcement.

Netflix revealed Eiichiro Oda’s one-shot manga, ‘Monsters: Ippaku Sanjō Hiryū Jigoku’ will inspire an anime. Netflix further announced character visuals and stated the January 2024 premiere of the anime.

The english title will be ‘Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation.’

The character visuals of Ryuma, Cyrano, and Flare were revealed. They will be the primary characters of the short anime. Currently, the voice actors for them have not yet been announced.

The story is set before the events of ‘One Piece,’ and it follows the adventures of Ryuma. He is Zoro’s ancestor and a legendary swordsman who hails from the Land of Wano in ‘One Piece.’

‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ and ‘Jujutsu Kaisen 0’ director Sunghoo Park directs the anime and is also in charge of composition at Park’s new studio, E&H production. The anime will be the length of a single episode, as the manga is a one-shot.

2023 was an amazing year for ‘One Piece’ fans, with the ongoing plot in the manga, the conclusion of the “Wano Country arc,” and Netflix’s ‘One Piece TV’ series breaking the live-action curse.

‘Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation’ (MONSTERS: Ippaku Sanjō Hiryū Jigoku) is a Japanese one-shot manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Shueisha published it in the Autumn Special issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1994.

An original net animation (ONA) adaptation by E&H Production is set to premiere on Netflix in January 2024. The story depicts the past of the legendary samurai Ryuma, who also appeared in the Thriller Bark arc of ‘One Piece.’
